Is A Memory Foam Mattress For Me? | JOOVE Article Portal

Who would have thought that NASA astronauts would discover the memory foam mattress. Well, they did, but it wasn't from a expedition to the moon. In the 1970's, NASA funded a development project to create something that could cushion the astronauts during the intense lift-off period. It was believed that one key factor to reducing the pressure from the g-forces on their bodies was to use a special type of foam. This foam needed to mold to the astronauts' body and retain its shape. A foam mold wasn't the ideal solution since movement out of the mold could put dangerous pressure on vital parts of the body. The solution was memory foam. Visco-elastic polyurethane foam(memory foam) was created, which could conform to the body but also return to it's normal shape. This could distribute the weight of a person evenly over the entire surface of the foam and at the same time adapt to new movements. See, now you can thank NASA for not only putting a man on the moon, but giving you an awesome memory foam bed to sleep on!

Now that you know how memory foam came about, you may be asking yourself, "is a memory foam mattress for me?". It's a good idea to at least start with the basic knowledge of memory foam. Memory foam beds have been on the retail market for about 20 years now and are becoming more popular because of their unparalleled comfort. Because of the technology and unique materials that go into making these mattresses, they normally cost more than a traditional mattress. But, it's a small additional cost for the best rest you'll ever have. The three major factors that are going to determine the feel of the mattress are density, firmness, and the thickness of the memory foam layer.

The health benefits of a memory foam mattress are vast, and of all the different types of beds on the market today, memory foam is most beneficial to the average person's health. Some of the stand-out features of a memory foam are:

  • -Superior back and spine support
  • -Even distribution of weight to prevent uncomfortable pressure on joints
  • -No springs poking your back
  • -Energy absorbing, so you won't feel your partner shifting around
